‘Where Tourists Don’t Go’ is a story that can take tourism and shines a light on it. Tourism isn’t a bad thing however when a tourist acts like Robin and refuse to take part in a culture they are visiting, festival or not, there is somewhat an issue. Turning your nose up at something you are not used to is a snobby touristy thing to do. Robin wanted to go to the festival because she wanted to see what Jamaica was like. If feel like Robin romanticized Jamaica a bit. She also somewhat fetishizes Mason by calling him her little island boy. She has a certain image of what to expect of Jamaica and when she doesn’t get that she is disappointed.
Both Robin and Mason don’t seem to want to be with each other. They seem to be with each other out of necessity and expectation, not because they want to be together. They can’t decide how to decorate their house so they decide to go with a culture that neither of them are apart of, and it’s kinda ridiculous.
