In the fourth and final section of Abeng we see a change in Clare’s life. After Clare shoots Old Joe the bull her parents see her differently as well as her grandmother. They think she’s crazy because only a crazy person would randomly shoot an animal. There is also a difference in Clare. This was a moment where she truly had to grow up. Clare’s story is, in my opinion, a story of a confused girl that is trying to find out who she and what her identity is exactly.
The ending of this book was a little disappointing to me to be honest. I thought there would a realization on Clare’s part. However I need to realize that she is 12 and major life realizations don’t really come to you at such a young age when you are still figuring out life.
