In this first section we have the first look into Clare’s life. Religion is something the seems to be focused on the most in the first section as well. The way religion is talked about shows that it is a big part of the over all culture of her environment. It gives insight to her as a whole and her home life. The fact that her parents attend two different churches the reflect their personalities and who they view themselves as in relation to race reflects on Clare as well.
I found it interesting how there were mentions of the ancestors of people on the islands as well and how their religion has changed in comparison to the more recent and colonized island. Magic was an important part of their culture but once their land became more colonized the less it was used.
